Every time we stay we have a wonderful time due to Jo & his wonderful team. We are made to feel so welcome the minute we arrive by happy greetings & friendly staff. Nicki & Rachelle do a wonderful job at the bar & are always happy. The rooms are immaculately cleaned with 5 star linen & air conditioning. The beds & pillows are very comfortable & there is a bar fridge in every room. The bathrooms & toilets are always clean & there are thick white towels which are of high quality. Every meal we have had has been totally delicious & high quality. There are homemade deserts to choose from too. The beer garden is warm in winter with huge heaters & a cool breeze comes through in March when it was over 30*. There is also air conditioning in the main dining too. Kids & dogs are totally welcome. This hotel is a wonderful friendly place to stay in Esk. Always stay in Esk for 2 nights, it is a lovely friendly town. What a disappointment! The woman behind the counter was miserable, no sense of humour, and if she cracked a smile it would probably kill her. So welcoming customer service was not present from the off. We ordered a steak for my wife and a chicken parmi for me. The parmi did not have any flavour at all, certainly not like any I had had before, and my wife's steak was very thin, like a cheap minute steak. Not a place I would recommend if you want quality meals at a good price, and friendly service. You ordered the $20 rib fillet which, until recently, was solely our steak for kids meals and burgers only. Due to it's popularity, we added it to the new main menu by public request as the cheaper steak meal. A 150g steak can never be a thick steak. We do however have a Signature Black Angus Marble Score 3+ Rib Fillet and a Sanchoku F1 Wagyu Grain Fed Marble Score 8-9 Rump on the menu, both are 350g a nice thick steak and incredibly good. Cannot understand how a Chicken Parmy has no flavour. And Finally all our staff are really nice people and would do anything for you. I do not think anyone should be degraded publicly. But we were welcomed on arrival and then given the 3 menus - such a huge choice. The normal menu, the specials for the day menu and the Parmies menu as it was a Thursday night - of course!! Rooms were clean and I loved the bathrooms down the hall - a real "back to the '40s experience". Definitely recommend this place. The burgers were huge and we joked with the staff that we wouldn’t be able to open our mouths big enough. We sat outside in the garden which was a lovely spot to while away a few hours. Hotel kelas melati sampai bintang lima—ditambah bar dan karaoke yang menyediakan hostes untuk tamu—bertebaran di kawasan tersebut. Konon, Mangga Besar adalah lokalisasi terbesar di Jakarta sepanjang dekade 60'an. Daerah tersebut memasuki Abad 21, harus diakui baru sepenuhnya hidup ketika senja mulai merayap. Karyawan bar dan hotel dengan seragam licin terseterika tiba di tempat kerja masing-masing. Ketika malam semakin larut, kawasan tersebut bakal dipenuhi mobil dan motor para itu di salah satu hotel melati berlantai delapan dengan cat warna-warni, Wasnen tengah duduk di belakang meja resepsionis sambil memainkan ponsel genggam keluaran Nokia-nya. Meja itu lebih tepat disebut seonggok kayu dibandingkan meja resepsionis. Bentuknya sudah tak karuan dan meja kerja Wasnen selama tiga tahun kariernya sebagai resepsionis. Kursi kerja plastiknya sudah memudar dan penyok di bagian punggung, tanda bahwa ia tak pernah absen diduduki masuk hotel tempat Wasnen memakai kaos abu-abu dan celana kain hitam saat saya temui. Ia mudah gugup ketika bertemu orang yang baru dikenalnya. Butuh waktu agar obrolan menjadi cair. Usianya 36 tahun. Ia punya dua anak yang ditinggal di kampung. Sekali dalam setahun, ia menyempatkan diri pulang demi keluarganya. Ia mengaku berasal dari Tegal, Jawa Tengah. Wasnen sempat bekerja serabutan di Jakarta sebelum seorang kawan menawari pekerjaan sebagai penjaga lumayan menyita waktu, ia kudu berjaga selama 12 jam per hari dengan jatah libur sehari. Gajinya kecil, cuma Rp700 ribu per bulan, tapi oleh pemilik hotel ia diberi tempat tinggal di lantai paling atas hotel tersebut bersama tiga karyawan lainnya."Pekerjaannya cukup membosankan karena saya cuma duduk-duduk," kata Wasnen. "Tapi lumayan karena sudah dapat tempat tinggal dan kadang dikasih makan. Jadi gaji bisa saya tabung buat di kampung."Saya memutuskan menemani Wasnen berjaga menerima tamu hotel malam itu. Lobi hotel beralih fungsi jadi tempat parkir motor. Di situ cuma ada etalase minuman dan meja resepsionis. Tak ada CCTV atau pun jenis pengamanan lainnya. Hotel tersebut terletak di Jalan Mangga Besar yang hanya muat satu mobil. Sekian meter depan hotel, mengalir Kali Tangki yang kadang menebar bau busuk sampah rumah tangga. Nyatanya lokasi yang kurang mentereng tersebut rupanya tidak menyurutkan niat tamu menyewa kamar. Selama 10 menit saya duduk di samping Wasnen, setidaknya sudah ada enam pasangan tua dan muda mengantre. Semua ingin menyewa kamar dilarang masuk. Tapi faktanya ya enggak ada yang ngecek tamu tak diwajibkan meninggalkan kartu identitas. Transaksi cuma berdasarkan prinsip "ada duit ada kamar." Begitu uang tunai diterima, Wasnen sigap mencatat setiap transaksi dalam buku besar andalannya, lalu tamu bisa bergegas menuju kamar. Tak lupa, ia akan memberikan satu bungkus sabun mandi kecil buat setiap hotel cinta, tamu bisa memilih rentang waktu menyewa kamar mulai dari tiga jam, 12 jam, atau 24 jam. Tamu dipatok ongkos Rp70 ribu untuk tiga jam ngamar. Sedangkan harga kamar 12 jam adalah Rp160 ribu, dan Rp200 ribu untuk seharian harga sudah cocok, tamu akan diantarkan ke kamar oleh petugas kebersihan bernama Suhartati. Saya mencoba mengikuti Suhartati berkeliling mengantar tamu malam itu melewati lorong yang terasa remang meski sudah dilengkapi tiga buah lampu neon. Usianya sudah menginjak kepala lima, namun Suhartati, asal Pemalang, Jawa Tengah, masih cekatan naik dan turun tangga. Selama bekerja ia dibantu rekan setengah bayanya bernama Kusmiyati. Suhartati mengucapkan kalimat yang terdengar seperti mantra, tiap selesai mengantar tamu "terima kasih, selamat beristirahat."Lorong dari meja resepsionis menuju kamar-kamar paket hemat untuk main tiga lantai di hotel itu punya 24 kamar berukuran masing-masing 3x5 meter dengan kamar mandi ukuran 1x2 meter, dilengkapi WC jongkok dan satu ember besar. Setiap kamar cuma punya satu kipas angin yang tak berguna menghilangkan pengap. Bau apek sprei dan kasur tua seolah keabadian, karena tidak ada ventilasi di setiap kamar. Jangan tanya kapan terakhir kali sprei tersebut dicuci dan diganti. Suhartati saja kesulitan semua kekurangan tadi, serta suasana muramnya, hotel tersebut merupakan salah satu favorit di Mangga Besar. Pelanggan hotel ini berasal dari ekonomi menengah bawah. Di akhir pekan, kata Suhartati, jumlah tamu yang menginap bisa mencapai 150 pasangan per hari. Sepanjang ingatan Suhartati bekerja di hotel tersebut, ia belum pernah melihat ada penggerebekan yang suka dilakukan Satpol PP, atau ormas keagamaan untuk menciduk pasangan mesum di ruang-ruang tertutup. Di tengah meningkatnya upaya ormas radikal mengatur persoalan moral di negara ini, masih bebasnya bisnis lucah di Mangga Besar tentu jadi oase tersendiri bagi pasangan yang menginginkan tanya kapan terakhir kali seprei dan sarung bantalnya diganti."Kalau hari biasa paling cuma ada tamu puluhan," kata Suhartati. "Awal bulan biasanya ramai banget. Daerah sini memang aman dari penggerebekan, makanya banyak tamu ke sini."Saya kembali menuju lantai bawah tempat Wasnen bertugas. Lobi masih ramai dengan tamu yang hilir mudik. Tidak ada percakapan dengan tamu selain tanya jawab soal ketersediaan kamar dan harga sewa. Belum ada dua jam saya di situ kebosanan sudah mulai melanda. Tidak ada hiburan selain memainkan ponsel. Wasnen bilang dirinya sudah terbiasa dengan lingkungan kerjanya. Ia sudah terbiasa menyaksikan berbagai tingkah polah tamunya yang kadang absurd—terutama gara-gara pengaruh sekali waktu tamunya mabuk berat, nyaris pingsan, sampai harus dibopong olehnya menuju kamar. Pagi harinya, ia harus membersihkan bekas muntah di lantai kamar. Ia memang kadang merangkap sebagai petugas kebersihan. Tak jarang ia menemukan bekas darah di sprei kasur dan harus mencucinya saat itu juga. Wasnen sudah malas mencari tahu dari mana asal darah dokumenter VICE mengenai para penari lelaki di Banyumas mendobrak tabu soal simbol gender melalui kesenian yang nyaris punah"Itu semua hal biasa," kata Wasnen. "Pernah juga ada rombongan tamu berpasangan yang menyewa satu kamar. Padahal satu kamar harusnya cuma buat dua orang. Tapi ya enggak mungkin juga melarang, kan mereka bayar."Hotel kelas melati memang kadang minim pengamanan. Pada 2012, kata Wasnen, di hotel tersebut pernah terjadi pembunuhan seorang perempuan di kamar 109. Ia memang belum bekerja di hotel tersebut waktu itu, namun ia kerap mendengar cerita dari rekan dan warga sekitar. Sampai sekarang pelaku pembunuhan tersebut belum juga tertangkap oleh polisi meski sketsa tersangka sudah disebar. Penyebabnya, tidak ada CCTV yang terpasang dan kartu identitas yang diberikan ke pihak hotel juga nihil. Enam tahun pasca kejadian, sistem manajemen risiko hotel tidak juga berubah."Sampai sekarang rasanya masih aneh saja," kata Wasnen. "Kayak ada yang mengganjal ketika tahu Tempat kerja saya bekas pembunuhan. Sampai sekarang untungnya belum ada kejadian aneh lagi di sini."Saya dalam proses magang bersama jarum jam menuju angka 10, Wasnen beranjak dari kursinya memeriksa situasi setiap lantai hotel. Saya mengikuti dari belakang. Asap rokok menyeruak memenuhi lorong lantai dua. Lorong tersebut senyap dan lengang. Wasnen berkeliling sekadar buat memastikan setiap tamu mematuhi aturan jam sewa. Tidak ada lift di hotel tersebut. Alhasil keliling menuju ke semua lantai jelas menguras energi."Dalam semalam biasanya ada dua kali muter buat ngecek," kata Wasnen. "Kalau enggak dibawa gerak, badan malah capek cuma duduk-duduk."Saat tengah malam, beberapa orang tamu masih berdatangan. Salah seorang perempuan dengan dandanan menor dan mulut berbau alkohol bersandar ke meja resepsionis sambil menanyakan apakah pengelola menyediakan kondom. Wasnen menjawab hotel tidak menyediakan barang macam itu. Pria yang datang bersama si perempuan cuma diam sambil memandang jam dinding. Gerak tubuhnya tak sabar ingin segera menyergap kasur di jam memang bergerak lambat ketika tak ada hal yang bisa dilakukan. Ketika jarum jam menunjuk angka 5 di pagi hari. Wasnen bersiap mengakhiri shift-nya. Ia menyeduh kopi sambil duduk-duduk di depan hotel. Saya juga menyeruput kopi, namun mata saya sudah sulit diajak gini doang pekerjaan saya nyaris pun beranjak pamit dan Wasnen segera menuju kamarnya di lantai delapan untuk beristirahat. Sebelum berpamitan Wasnen sempat bilang ke saya meski sering mendapat cap miring karena kerja di hotel mesum, dirinya mengaku bersyukur karena tidak harus mengemis atau mencuri untuk mencari uang."Orang mungkin mikir kerja di hotel ginian tidak membawa manfaat, tapi hotel seperti ini bisa ngasih apa yang selama ini dicari orang, perasaan aman karena enggak ada yang bakal gangguin," tandasnya. "Jadi apa salahnya kerja di hotel seperti ini?"
